Julia Heslop is a Newcastle-based artist who works across the boundaries of art and architecture. The potentials for deep participation in the urban environment are at the centre of her practice and she often works in participatory, slow ways with groups and communities. She uses her work to ask important questions regarding land and property ownership, housing precarity, urban planning and local democracy.
Working alongside James Perry of Harper Perry Architects, Julia will examine DIY approaches to the development of social and community spaces. Drawing on her expertise and experience of collaborating with diverse communities, she will work with participants to explore new approaches to creating and maintaining their own community spaces, which acknowledge how the global pandemic has altered our relationships with social space.
