Preston Bench

The specially designed Preston Bench was commissioned by Preston City Council after the huge impact of the 4 week project Harris Flights in 2013. As a popular venue for temporary performances and activities, the Flag Market required a seating solution to suit the variety of uses of the square.

The contemporary Preston Bench features a wheel which allows it to be mobile. Six benches, which seat up to ten people each, have so far been installed to provide both movable seating for events and a resting spot for those who want to spend time in the city square. Designed by Professor Charles Quick of In Certain Places, architect Charlie McKeith, and local joiner Andy Fountain of Smithy Joinery, the benches are highly crafted from sustainable hardwood with stainless steel fittings, a contemporary reference to Preston’s traditional board market and it’s portable stalls.
