As writer-in-residence for the Expanded City, Lauren Velvick documented and provided a critical context for the project, through a series of blogposts and a publication. She also undertook her own creative research, initially examining the ‘employment area’ to the north east of Preston City Centre, before focusing on the practical and political issues surrounding housing.
Velvick is particularly interested in new and re-emerging forms of ‘household’ that come about when families live intergenerationally, and the under-representation of particular demographics, such as households made up of adults who are not related but rent a property together. Her research in this area culminated in Open House – an informal evening of music and discussions about housing in a soon-to-be-demolished terraced house in Preston City Centre.
