‘PEOPLE’ was a new temporary artwork at Preston’s iconic Bus Station that invited people to engage with the space in new ways.
A special regard for those using the bus station, (commuters, visitors, staff, students, shoppers to name but a few), seems to sit at the heart of the ambition of the station’s design and construction – something that is echoed in the way in which people continue to value it as architecturally and socially important.
LOW PROFILE’s intent was to value and celebrate the people of Preston by placing them at the heart of the bus station, to highlight the role people play in shaping and making place.
In June 2019 the word ‘PEOPLE’ was painted on the forecourt of Preston Bus Station, a temporary intervention that disappeared as the forecourt undergoes further development.
A film of the creation process draws attention to the changing nature of the space whilst making a statement about its future use, mirroring the way that road markings normally direct our attention and behaviour in how we navigate place. The film is showing at the exhibition Beautiful and Brutal: 50 years in the life of Preston Bus Station at the Harris Museum, Art Gallery and Library. , 21st September – 24th November.
