Re-thinking the Rural Seminar

Re-thinking the Rural was a half-day seminar that brought together artists, geographers, historians and other people with an interest in the politics of landscape, to discuss cultural representations and perceptions of ‘the rural’. The event included presentations of academic research, as well as examples of how artists have engaged with issues of land-ownership and the natural world within their practice.

‘Chat Moss’ by Tracy Hill

As part of the Re-thinking the Rural seminar, artist Tracy Hill presented her research into Chat Moss in Salford.

‘Freeman’s Wood’ by John Angus

As part of the Re-thinking the Rural seminar, John Angus presented his curatorial project, ‘Landed’, which explores issues of land ownership in Lancaster.

‘Rituals of Extinction’ by Jonathan Westaway

As part of the Re-thinking the Rural seminar, historian Jonathan Westaway presented his research into Manhunting Games in the British Outdoor Movement between 1890-1914.

‘Rural Modernity, Everyday Life and Visual Culture’ by Rosemary Shirley

As part of the Re-thinking the Rural seminar, art historian Rosemary Shirley presented her research into rural mythologies.

‘Ruskin’s View’ by Abi Townsend

As part of the Re-thinking the Rural seminar, artist Abi Townsend presented her MA Fine Art project about ‘Ruskin’s View’ in Cumbria.
