Creative Infrastructure Lab #2: How can we shift the way we use the space between buildings?

Led by Emily Speed

Emily Speed is an artist based in the North West, whose interest lies in the relationship between people and the built environment; how a person is shaped by the buildings they have occupied and how a person occupies their own psychological space. Emily has previously worked with In Certain Places to explore possibilities for more informal and expansive approaches to play within our everyday environments, through activities such as ‘Model Village’ – a participatory project on an empty plot in a new housing development.

Collaborating with architect Akiko Kobayashi, Emily will investigate how the unused spaces between buildings in the places that we live have the potential for unexpected uses. They will draw on their experience and expertise of working with diverse communities to encourage the exploration of alternative uses of places. Participants will develop the tools and expertise needed to instigate such projects within their own communities, whilst acknowledging how the global pandemic has altered our relationship with the areas that surround and fill the spaces between our buildings.
