Fern Nicholas, a mixed media artist, examines themes of sustainability, collection, horticulture and recycling. She is interested in the connections between the natural world and capitalist consumer culture, as well as how becoming out of tune with our environment affects us physically, mentally and spiritually. Fern’s work tends to be experimental and she sees it as a learning process for both the viewer and herself. By observing aspects of modern life and the consequences of globalization on humans, creatures and the spaces we inhabit, she aims to highlight ways in which we can rebuild our relationship with nature and, in turn, learn how to reconnect with our surroundings and one another in order to achieve a more stable future.
